The call of gaming goodness
July 07, 2004 Bangkok, Thailand

Every few months, I get an uncontrollable urge to play video games. Unfortunately, besides Civilization III, my laptop isn’t much of a gaming machine. That means I would have to buy a Playstation 2 and a TV to experience gaming goodness.

But I don’t like buying things. I’ve found an apartment I’ll be in for awhile though, so I won’t have to lug it around. And since my apartment charges 500 baht a month to rent a TV, it would pay for itself in a year. Plus, I would be able to watch DVDs (which will eventually require a home-theater-in-a-box).

Hmmm, I guess I could take the new Subway right to Central Ladprao. I’ll just go and look around. To be continued…

best place to get a ps2 is MBK, 6th floor, towards the back (by the tourist gifts section) - there are three games places, two next to each other and one just across. Go to the smallest one (run by two guys, directly next door to a bigger place that has billions of GBA games. They sell PS2 for around 9500 inc 10 games. I got mine there, nice guys as well.

Note tho that the Ps2 isnt that good at dvd playback...

If you want a console thats *really* good at dvd, get an xbox...

civilization iii conquests has been out for a while, but you prolly know that already.

if you have a laptop then some of the older games out there can still be good fun, like diablo ii, icewind dale ii, and so on.

i have a ps2 and xbox and i must say the latter is the better of the two, though more expensive and less games available. but overall i wind up using the internet and wind up playing games on the computer much more.

i never had any problems getting xbox games here. i can't think of one i wanted that I never found... erm...

the only real problem is that here xbox games are not mass produced copies like PS2, they are "normal" dvdrs, so they scratch easily and mark badly. A few times I have had a game not work but, usually, as the shops owners know me, they are happy to exchange.

technically, yeah, the PS2 is beginning to flag a little but hey, it's still home to some of the best games though, these days with so many game being multi-platform, I do tend to try and get either the xbox or pc variant.
