Spiritual supermarkets
May 19, 2005 Bangkok, Thailand

Supermarkets in Thailand look much like those back home, a welcome bastion of familiarity and order. At least until it comes time to pay. But in addition to cereal and frozen food, they also have an aisle dedicated to your spiritual needs, whether they be Buddhist or Chinese.

Here are some boxes that contain a mobile phone, gold watch, gold bracelet, gold eyeglasses, pen, and other assorted goodies, all for 38 baht, less than a dollar! Unfortunately, it's all made out of cardboard.

While a living person wouldn't find this stuff too useful, Chinese offer these to their ancestors by burning them. It's cheaper than using a real mobile phone.
