Japantown
May 10, 2005
Bangkok, Thailand

Looking past the Emporium shopping mall from the Phrom Phong BTS station. This is a very expensive part of town catering mainly to Japanese. Sorry if the pictures aren't that interesting. These are just the things I see every day on my way to and from work.

Sanook
May 15, 2005
Bangkok, Thailand

Thai people like to have fun, or sanook, at work. Well, at least the Thai people who don’t work at my school. Here are a couple of security guards playing in the park next to my apartment.

Spiritual supermarkets
May 19, 2005
Bangkok, Thailand

Supermarkets in Thailand look much like those back home, a welcome bastion of familiarity and order. At least until it comes time to pay. But in addition to cereal and frozen food, they also have an aisle dedicated to your spiritual needs, whether they be Buddhist or Chinese.

Here are some boxes that contain a mobile phone, gold watch, gold bracelet, gold eyeglasses, pen, and other assorted goodies, all for 38 baht, less than a dollar! Unfortunately, it's all made out of cardboard.

While a living person wouldn't find this stuff too useful, Chinese offer these to their ancestors by burning them. It's cheaper than using a real mobile phone.

Monk buckets
May 21, 2005
Bangkok, Thailand

All Thai males become a monk at some point in their lives, even if only for a few days, because if brings merit to themselves and their families. Supermarkets all have handy “monk buckets,” containing everything a new monk could want: water, orange drink, toothpaste, soap, candles, matches, and more. Families can buy one of these and offer it to their monk at the temple.

I'm not exactly sure what these are. They look like fancy monk buckets. Maybe they are Chinese?

Fon tok nak
May 29, 2005
Bangkok, Thailand

As I walked home last night in a fon tok nak (big rain storm) last night, I pondered the rainy season, which is now upon us. Contrary to what we think in the West, “rainy season” does not mean in rains constantly. On the contrary, in only rains:

  • When you have to go somewhere.
  • When you are somewhere, and want to go home.
  • When you are outside, and don’t have an umbrella.

Then once you reach your destination, the rain will stop.

So that means it rains in the morning and at night, maybe only for 30 minutes. But in that short amount of time you experience a rainstorm like you’ve never seen before. A massive deluge of water that instantly overloads the drainage system, and turns the streets into rivers. Even the sidewalks of major thoroughfares like Sukhumvit turn into raging whitewater rapids.

And to make matters worse, all of those empty taxis you always see driving around instantly become full the moment it starts raining.
